about

Built out of two everyday frustrations.

First: when an agent handed me a folder of work — a report, a dashboard, some images, the source behind them — reviewing it meant three apps and constant switching.

Second, and just as often: when I wanted to jot something down, I had to open a notes app that imposed its own organization, when all I actually wanted was to drop a Markdown file into a folder I already had and edit it where it lived.

Superset Files is the one window that does both.

the ethos

A folder is already a set.

Superset just gives it a place to be read, edited, and trusted. That sentence is the whole design brief. Everything else follows from three commitments.

  • Finish what you ship.

A feature that is half-built stays out of a release. Every release ships as a finished thing: it installs like any trusted Mac app and keeps itself up to date, quietly, in the background.

  • Your files are not the app's business.

Superset Files opens the folder where it already lives. Nothing is copied into an app-owned library, and nothing is written to disk except the files you deliberately edit.

  • Security is tested, not asserted.

Every release runs through an automated safety net first: your files open unchanged, previews stay sandboxed, and every theme stays readable. The build you download is the build that passed.

the mark

What the braces mean.

The icon is set notation, not decoration. It reads the same way the sidebar does once you open a folder.

the empty set

No folder open yet. Nothing assumed, nothing pre-loaded.

an opened root

Point Superset at a folder and it becomes a set with a name — still just a folder on disk.

the workspace around the set

The outer brace is Superset: the window, the reading surface, the trust boundary — wrapped around your set, not replacing it.

design notes

Four materials. Mid-2000s Mac soul.

The interface borrows a feeling more than a decade of flat software mostly gave up on: things that look like they have a surface. Depth comes from real borders, insets, bevels, and cast shadows.

Glass

Chrome only — the titlebar, the header, floating controls. Never the document itself.

Gel

Reserved for the one primary action on a screen. If everything is gel, nothing is.

Matte

Flat and opaque, for reading. Documents are matte because reading should be quiet.

Jewel

The one material used for the icon itself — a small, considered exception, not a pattern to repeat.

Three type lanes keep the voice consistent everywhere the app talks.

  • serif

Reading. Markdown, reports, anything meant to be read closely.

  • system sans

Chrome. Menus, buttons, labels — the app talking to you.

  • mono

Metadata. File names, paths, shortcuts, numbers — the app reporting state.
